The pro-choice and pro-life movements disagree on the ethics of abortion. However, a compromise between these groups is possible if we allow abortions but regulate when they are allowed to be performed. Both movements ultimately want what is best for the unborn child and the pregnant mother. The pro-choice side would rather end the life of a fetus than have it brought unwanted into a disadvantaged home, while the pro-life movement would seek life for the child no matter the circumstances of birth. Both view their concerns as what's best for the unborn baby. One way to regulate abortion so that both sides get a little bit what they want is to regulate the timing of the procedure. Studies show that a fetus can feel pain at around 24 weeks gestation, so just to be cautious, we should outlaw abortion at 20 weeks gestation to ensure that the procedure does not cause pain to the fetus. We should also encourage women to test regularly for pregnancy so that no one finds out they are pregnant this far along. In other words, a woman should know she is pregnant in the first trimester. To accomplish this, at-home pregnancy tests should be made more affordable. Government subsidies for pregnancy tests will ensure that women have easier access to them and can test for pregnancy to determine whether or not they need an abortion. With these measures in place, abortion will still be allowed early in the pregnancy, giving the pro-choice side a measure of what they seek, but abortion will be outlawed after the 20th week of gestation to make sure no fetus feels pain. A woman must carry the pregnancy to term after the 20th week, giving the pro-life movement what they seek as well.
