Memos are one-page (750 word minimum) single-spaced essays (no more than 10 font) and are due in the morning on Blackboard before we discuss assigned readings (a physical copy should also be brought to class). Memos are not mere summaries of course reading material but intellectual interrogations. They must reflect your ability to discuss central ideas, synthesize, reflect, and critically evaluate the central thematic points intersecting weekly readings. To assist in this process, below are discussion questions to facilitate your probing of the course readings and to help stimulate your written responses. Ensure that you write in a grammatically correct manner and alignment and spacing utilized are in accordance with standard academic custom.

Note that you must not utilize outside information (from the internet or otherwise).

The only information to be utilized is assigned readings. Evidence to the contrary may result in an ungraded memo. If you are paraphrasing or quoting the articles or textbook, please ensure that you cite in accordance with standard academic custom (eg. Mills, 22 or Berger, 15). You may use MLA or APA style if you like.

Guided Questions: Answer 2 or more of the following questions ensuring that you demonstrate knowledge of the major themes in the textbook and articles under discussion. Your answers should succinctly synthesize the interlocking themes across the assigned readings.

1) According to your text, what does the history of opium demonstrate regarding definitions of normal and deviant? What does this say about the relationship between power and deviance?

2) What does white-collar crime (found in the examples of Enron and the 2008 financial crisis) reveal about power and deviance? How does this relate to other forms of criminal behaviors and the punishment established?

3) How has the crime rate and incarceration rates changed in the United States. What does this reveal about our criminal justice system?

4) Your text highlights Abu Ghraib and its tie to deviance? Explain what happened in Abu Ghraib and why it might be significant from a perspective of social control and deviance.
