Question: On February 25, 2022, President Joe Biden nominated Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to serve as the 116th Associate Justice to the Supreme Court of the United States of America. With her nomination and subsequent confirmation, many Country's vice president, many barriers Links to an external site.were broken. She will be the first Black woman to hold this position. Many describe her accomplishment as breaking the concrete ceiling, a term used to discuss the barriers that women of color face. Despite these accomplishments, our media, whether intentionally or not, still often discusses women in power in a biased and sexist nature.

For your final­­­ project, your assignment is to review media coverage of the treatment and questioning of Ketanji Brown Jackson hearings as compared to those of Brett Kavanaugh in 2018 and/or Amy Coney Barrett in 2020. You are to research and locate examples of gender stereotypes, modern sexism, old-fashioned sexism, modern racism, old-fashioned racism, emphatic femininity, and emphatic masculinity in the media coverage. (You might also find the opposite and that the media has been treating her more kindly than her predecessor.) You can search any media, including video, television, and radio coverage.

For example, if Ketanji Brown Jackson had blown up in anger the way Brett Kavanaugh had done during his questioning, how do you think that would have been received and interpreted by the media.

For example, look at the media coverage (or lack there of) the clothing of the justices--what they wore to the hearings. Look at how the media covered, commented, made assumptions about the families of the justices during their confirmation hearings (discussions about their children, roles as a working parent, their respective spouses, etc.) And look at how the media portrayed the treatment of the justices during their questioning.

Again, these are just some ideas to get you going on the project. The goal is to compare media coverage of Ketanji Brown Jackson and Brett Kavanaugh (and/or Amy Coney Barrett) and highlight any gender differences during their respective confirmation hearings.

Oh, one more example. I did a Google image search on Ketanji Brown Jackson and Brett Kavanaugh and included the images below. Why is Kavanaugh shown as so serious, and Brown Jackson has a smile on her face and appears to laugh? What does this say about leadership in terms of gender? What does it say about being on the Supreme Court?
