7) "The Welder" by Cherríe Moraga
Step II: Post your response for the following questions:
For your post, respond to ALL of the following questions. The post should be at least 250 words. Please number your responses:
1) Choose four of our class texts on success and resilience which resonated the most with you and answer the following questions:
a) What kind of examples of success and resilience does each author provide?
b) What aspect of resilience do these examples represent, such as growth mindset (Dweck), asking for help (Moodie), becoming fearless (Kavanagh), rising above single stories (Adichie), assisting others (Zaki), finding community (Angelou), or standing up for change (Moraga)?
2) Provide a "golden line" (a key line you thought was important) from each of your four chosen class sources. Copy and paste the exact words for the quote and put this in quote marks. (There is NO OUTSIDE RESEARCH -- only discuss and quote from our Unit 1 texts). After each quote explain what it means and why it is important. Remember to use the MLA format for quotes with a signal phrase at the beginning and parenthetical citation at the end for sources with time stamps (TED Talks), page numbers (articles-- when provided), or line numbers (poetry), such as:
a) Dweck explains, " " (5:13).
b) Zaki states that " ."
c) Moraga describes, " " (lines 47-48).
3) After reflecting on our Unit 1 texts and your own life, what are two key ingredients which help us to become more successful and resilient which you would like to develop for Essay 1, such as growth mindset and asking for help, or rising above single stories and finding community, or becoming fearless and standing up for change. NOTE: your response to this question will serve as a "working thesis statement" for Essay 1.
4) Describe a specific example from your own experience which illustrates the two key ingredients for success and resilience you have identified, such as the time you struggled with a learning disability in achallenging math class, but then used a growth mindset combined with asking for help to create new techniques to do well in school, or being told that because you were short you could never play for your high school basketball team, but then using the idea of rising above single stories and finding community in teammates and coaches who supported you to become the best point guard your school had ever had, or suffering under a toxic work environment but then using the idea ofbecoming fearless and standing up for change to take classes which qualified you for a supervisor position, eventually replacing your old boss, and then creating a more positive work environment, etc.
