Questions: Civilized vs. Savage
In Chapter IV of BNW, the high school age boys tour of the factory that reproduces and conditions humans continues. One of the World Controllers, Mustafa Mond, visits the factory and gives the young men historical background about what society was like before the revolution. Much of their current social norms A.F. (After Ford) are the exact opposite or reverse of our own.
Comment the existence or extinction of the following social norms in our society in the Brave New World: Sex, Love, Romance, Monogamy, Marriage, Family, History, Religions, psychology, emotions, and etc. What are the reason for this? What are your thoughts about this change in social norms?
Dystopian novels and films arguably produce uncanny feelings in readers + viewers, regardless of whether or not those readers + viewers are part of their intended audience, because they preserve the familiarity of the familiar in their various [futuristic] doubling of present or past society. Do any of the above unfamiliar familiar aspects of the society of BWN produce uncanny feelings in you?
Note in particular what types of DOUBLING that you see. Also note whether these examples of doubling parallel doubling in 21C western culture and which examples of doubling have been inverted, juxtaposed, turned upside-down.
Lastly, what social, psychological, physiological, educational, ideological, commercial, etc phenomena that western culture might have considered to be dystopian and science fiction when Huxley wrote BNW have actually come to pass in our world today? In other words, are we living any of these once dystopian phenomena today? Is what was once considered an element of science fiction now fact?
