Essay: Informative Essay (700-900 words)
DIRECTIONS: Write an essay of a minimum of 700 words on one of the topics given in class. The essay must demonstrates your ability to communicate clearly and effectively. Your paper should have an introduction that engages the reader's interest and presents the thesis statement to be developed in your essay; supporting paragraphs, each with a topic sentence; and a concluding paragraph consisting of a summary and a final thought. Keep in mind that organizing your essay and supporting your ideas will be as important as your command of grammar and usage.
Students should be able to investigate a problem or issue, conduct research, analyze data and write a response that justifies the noteworthiness of the topic (why this topic is worthy of research).
» In informative writing, the assumption is that the writer has more experience on the subject matter than the reader. The objective of the writer is to enhance the reader's view of the subject by shedding new light on the subject.
» Using a combination of research and personal experience, write an informative essay in a tone and style suitable for general readers. Your rhetorical objective is to arouse the curiosity of your readers by posing an interesting question and then responding to it with information that is new to the target audience.
» Students should consider:
• What is the problem? (Define the problem, tell how it resembles other problems)
• Why is it a problem? (Provide multiple aspects of the problem without picking a side)
• Why is the problem worthy of investigation?
