Parents who are experiencing more severe grief are found to have a more recent loss; have a higher score on fearful and dismissing attachment style; utilize more avoidant coping strategies such as "denial," "self-blame" and "disengagement" and less problem-focused and emotion-focused coping strategies like "positive framing" and "acceptance." Parents with severe grief also perceive less support from their family, friends, and significant others. They are found to have fewer daily spiritual experiences; however, in the group with a higher level of grief severity, those who have more daily experiences are found to have fewer grief symptoms. Although the study hypothesized that participants who experienced more severe grief show significant differences in age, gender, and cause of death, data from the sample does not confirm these hypotheses.
