Deep/Mindful Practice Activity

One potentially beneficial training strategy would be to take a given skill and outline how it can be mastered through deep/mindful practice.

Deep/mindful practice involves breaking a skill into manageable steps while being attentive to the entire process. More specifically it entails:

1. Chunking the skill into steps.

Practicing each step individually while remaining conscientious about the whole process the skill entails.

2. Repeating the steps and the entire skill until it becomes a comfortable and natural act.

3. Feeling the skill.

This involves developing an understanding of when you are performing the skill correctly and well. Knowing when you have achieved mastery.

Given the steps above, think about and describe below a particular skill you have mastered by using deep/mindful practice. This need not be an organizational skill (e.g., your gold swing, a dance step, etc.). Describe in a few sentences how you moved through each of the aspects of deep/mindful practice described.

The Skill I mastered was (provide a brief description of the skill):

1. Chunking (What were the steps you identified? List and describe each in detail. Use as much space as necessary).

2. Repeating (How often did you repeat each step before it became comfortable and natural?)

3. Learn to feel the skill (At what point did you realize you knew and understood how to perform the skill correctly? Describe what the particular indicators were that confirmed you knew the skill well.)
