Question: "A Jury of Her Peers"
ACTIVITY 3
Instructions: In a Word document and using MLA guidelines and formatting, please write a short OUTLINE responding to the prompt below and using the sample below.
Included in this outline should be a total of 4 sentences: your thesis statement that responds to the prompt for the essay followed by three topic sentences. Be sure to review the assigned reading pages that focus on these topics to be write your sentences. There is a sample below.
Each of these sentences must be persuasive and be only one sentence in length. What you will notice below is that all the topic sentence restate the thesis and then add a topic (which will be explored and explained in the corresponding paragraphs).
Also, what you will notice is that I'm not using specific evidence as the topics. Instead, the specific evidence from the book would best serve as evidence in the paragraph to support the topic.
DO NOT USE SPECIFIC ITEMS OR ACTIVITIES FROM THE STORY AS TOPICS! Instead, think of a broader category into which those items and activities might fit. Sample of Incorrect Topic Sentence: Mrs. Wright is guilty because of the bird.
Better Topic Sentence:
Mrs. Wright is guilty based upon the physical evidence. "Physical evidence" is a broader category into which the bird fit and support. Plus, all other examples of evidence can support this paragraph. PROMPT: You are to argue that Minnie Wright is guilty OR she is not guilty. You have been assigned a position.
SAMPLE Thesis: Mrs. Wright is not guilty of murdering her husband, John Wright.
Topic Sentence 1: Mrs. Wright cannot be found not guilty because of the tainted crime scene.
Topic Sentence 2: Furthermore, Minnie Wright is not guilty because she is physically incapable of this type of murder.
Topic Sentence 3: Finally, Mrs. Wright is not guilty based upon the physical evidence.
