ESSAY ONE: THE MOVIE REVIEW


Describing her approach to reviewing a film, critic Pauline Kael said, "I go into the movie, I watch it, and I ask myself what happened to me." To prepare writing this review, ask yourself the same question and answer it in a composed, deliberate way, using Don McCleese' keys to quality criticism: Description, Context, Interpretation, and Evaluation.

Your opinion (evaluation) should come through clearly. So should a specific "angle." Choose an element of the film to focus on that will set your review apart from others, but make sure to include important context about the film and filmmakers. Tell us the who/what/where/when/why/how. Who made the film? Who is it about? Where is it set? When? Why should we see it or not see it? How does it "work" or not work?

Make sure to grab the readers' attention with an interesting lead and to end with a memorable kicker. Your tone should be formal enough to address a wide audience, but it should also sound like you. Write with style! And write with care. Typos and other sloppy mistakes will lower your grade.

Reviews should be approximately 1,500 words. Use Times New Roman 12-point font; your papers should be double-spaced. Please come up with a headline for your review. Also, rate the film on a scale of four stars.
