A 120-ft diameter cylindrical tank with an empty weight of 1,000,000 Ib (including the weight of the cylindrical mat foundation) is to be built. The bottom of the mat will be at a depth of 2 ft below the ground surface. This tank is to be filled with water. The underlying soil soil properties are c' = 350 Ib/ft^2, ? = 30 , ? = 105 lb/ft^3, and ?(sat) = 118 lb/ft^3. The groundwater table is at a depth of 5 ft. Using Terzaghi's equations, compute the maximum allowable depth of the water in the tank that will maintain a factor of safety of 3.0 against a bearing capacity failure.A thin-walled cylindrical pressure vessel is capped at the end and is subjected to an internal pressure (p). The inside diameter of the vessel is 6 ft and the wall thickness is 1.5 inch. The vessel is made of steel with tensile yield strength and compressive yield strength of 36 ksi. Determine the internal pressure required to initiate yielding according to (a) The maximum-shear-stress theory of failure, and (b) The maximum-distortion-energy theory of failure, if a factor of safety (FS) of 1.5 is desired.
