Now that we have explored the concepts of paraphrasing and summarizing in class, you have a chance to practice with these ideas! This assignment has three parts, and you must complete all. Partial marks will not be awarded for completing only one or two of the following three parts.
Even though these are three distinct parts, please make sure you focus on flow and connections between them.
Part One - Summarize a peer-review academic article about the writing process
Please read through the selected peer-reviewed academic article and create a summary of its content in 250 words.
Part Two - Interview an instructor about his/her/their writing process and summarize your findings
You will have time in class to locate an instructor on campus and interview them about their personal writing process. First, you will want to take some time to think about the questions you want to ask the instructor, and what you want to know about how they write. You might want to record your conversation with the instructor, or take notes. Some questions you might consider asking include:
• What kinds of things do you now write or have you enjoyed writing outside of school and work? Why? Who reads them? Do you like to share your writing with others? Why/why not?
• What mentors and/or teachers have helped you most with your reading and writing? In what ways?
• How do you get ideas or inspiration for writing? What do you do to get started (take a walk, avoid it, stare into space, talk it over with someone, make lists, draw mind maps, freewrite...)?
• What conditions for writing (time, place, atmosphere, etc.) seem best for you?
• Do you need deadlines to motivate you to write?
• Do you prefer to write drafts by hand or on the computer?
• What makes writing good or bad? What does a person need to become a good writer? Can anyone be a good writer?
If the instructor allows it, please also take a picture of their writing environment. Summarize your interview with the instructor in about 250 words.
Part Three - Summarize information about your writing process
Provide a summary of your writing process. You might use the questions you generated for your interview with an instructor as guiding questions to help you reflect on how you write, when you write, and where you write. Your summary should be between 100-250 words in length.
Submit the following documents to Canvas:
1. A 250-word summary of the peer-reviewed academic article
2. A 250-word summary of your findings from the interview
3. A 100-250 words summary of your writing process
