Question

A.T. is a 73-year-old white woman who has arrived in the emergency room by ambulance. A.T. lives at home and has been widowed for three years. The USPS driver noted that the mail had not been picked up for several days and alerted the police department for a wellness check. The police found A.T. on the floor of the bathroom where she had slipped getting out of the tub. She was incontinent of stool and urine and complaining of right hip pain. The police estimated she had been on he floor for two to three days. After A.T. had been placed in an ambulance, the police checked with neighbors and found out that A.T. has a son in a different state and were able to get his contact information. Communication with A.T.'s son reveals A.T. has a history of hypertension, hyperlipidemia, coronary artery disease, depression, osteoporosis, and macular degeneration. The son states that his mother has a history of heavy alcohol use, and she smokes a pack of cigarettes per day. He reported that she had stopped drinking alcohol 10 years ago but is concerned that his mother's alcohol and tobacco use has gone up since his father died.
