Chapter 10 Case Study: The RadOnc Clinic Expansion 10.1 Analyzing Flow Data A large scale radiation oncology clinic collected data that focused on time stamps showing entry and exit times for patients, nurses, residents, and attending physicians to and from examination rooms. The datasets produced were analyzed with an eye toward justifying additional space to accommodate a projected 20% increase in patient volume. Data collection included downloads from an Appointment Management System (AMS). In this system the nursing staff types in IN and OUT times to indicate when a patient enters and exists an examination room. Since staff enter much of this data manually, issues often arise including data entry errors and omissions. To address resulting inaccuracies, the analysts retrieved supplemental data from a Real Time Location System (RTLS) that was installed in the clinic space. Hospital staff and physicians wear badges that the RTLS reads. Thus, the RTLS provides additional information on the movement of key resources. This combined data set was scrubbed (See Case Study: Collecting Activity Times Using a RTLS) and is now available to analysts working to understand the linkages between the number of examination rooms and clinic capacity.
