Question: In discussion, you and a partner were assigned a debate topic. This assignment is divided into two parts: a paper, worth 150 points; and a debate, worth 150 points. For this paper, you will argue for your assigned position.

Use everything we have learned so far to defend your position on the question: (1) the trivium (grammar, logic, and rhetoric) as a foundation; (2) each tool of the speaker (ethos, logos, pathos) at least once; and (3) each aim of the speaker (to teach, to please, to move) at least once.

Use evidentiary materials to support your position. Cite additional sources when necessary (using Chicago Style Notes and Bibliography formatLinks to an external site.). Research is especially important to your counterarguments and to rebut your opponent's counterarguments.

Structure your paper to follow the Five Canons of Rhetoric and the Disposition of Rhetoric. Important for this assignment, in addition to arguing for your position, you MUST: (1) sketch out your partner's counterarguments(What would your partner say to attack your position?); (2) respond to your partner's counterarguments (Why is your partner's counterargument weak?); and (3) assert your own counterarguments (also called rebuttals) against your partner's position (What are the weakness in your partner's argument you can attack?).
