Identify at least 5 indicators that you think should be on your ESOL strategies observation checklist. These are ESOL strategies you should be able to observe in a K-6 classroom.

Explain in detail how each indicator either supports ELLs collaboration and learning or the teacher's modeling of standard English.

For example:

1. Give verbal information and explanations along with a visual presentation

Visual presentations can help EL students because they can respond to visual information much quicker. Visual presentations create long lasting memories and students will find it easier to retain the information.

2. Modeling

Showing ELL students how to perform a task while talking it through, before making them do it on their own or in groups can provide them with the confidence they need to do it on their own. It allows them to observe the teachers' techniques and realize that they can do the same. Many of them probably feel a lot of pressure to perform so the teacher modeling what they are expected to do can help them to feel more at ease. A teacher can also model common mistakes to help them avoid them and gain confidence by getting it right the first time on their own.
