Is a video from AP WASHIGNTON from Senator Reid

* A $14 billion bailout for Detroit 's struggling Big Three has died in the Senate. The collapse came after bipartisan talks on the auto rescue broke down over GOP demands that the labor union agree to steep wage cuts.

QUESTION 1: Describe Senator Reid's delivery style.

QUESTION 2: What type of presentation is Senator Reid giving? Is this the most effective style of presentation for this situation? Why or why not?

I believe that both of the speeches made key points of what they were trying to get recognition of.Senator Reid discussed the facts about working on the problems in the United States he made some good few points about getting this economy back right. In addition, to Senator Reid speech there was Mayor Nutter's speech who discussed the changes in Philadelphia as well as things he wants to improve as of now and in the future. All in all I believe that both of these speeches were done in a great fashion they discussed all of the issues which is always important.

1a. Senator Reid's delivery style was a manuscript delivery. Although he was looking up some, he was reading off the paper as if he had been rehearsing over it to not mess up and be familiar with it, but he was definitely reading it.
b. He was giving an oral briefing. I think for the audience he was delivering to that was the most effective because they were probably already familiar with the issue at hand, and the floor was open to suggestions to how the issue could be altered for the better in a now state versus having to wait.
2a. Nutter appeals and show he concerns for his audience by including himself as an "us" factor. He was showing that is just an effected of whatever and that they weren't going to be the only ones suffering and if he had to he would as well. He praised also the people for the progress and goal that had been accomplished.
He definitely understood his audience and use the statistics very effectively to help enhance the seriousness of what he was talking about. It was very easy to understand what he was saying and even feel sympathetic towards the issue.
I like Nutter's speech better. However, both speeches were suited for the audience they had to deliver to. Reid was talking to his peers in the same level and he didn't have to go into too much detail because they were probably familiar with the issue at hand. Nutter on the other hand was giving insight on the problem as well as trying to give a solution to it. Reid's speech was more formal, and Nutter's speech was more passion driven. No, I don't think Reid's speech could have delivered to Nutter's audience. He would have to include the details of what was going on and relate to his audience.

I agree with you on both speeches in that how they delivered them was appropriate towards the situation. For the first one this felt like a more informal speech in that he was just trying to put out the ideas to solve the situation and not so much heavily persuade people. The second speech with Mayor Nutter used, as you mention, the word "us" effectively. This is something I have to do in my job as well when working with customers into giving them a sense that friendliness, comradery, and that I'm working to help them.

Senator Reid chose to do a manuscript delivery in which the whole presentation was scripted out beforehand. This is probably common among politics as these speeches would be prepared meticulously, as least in theory, by aids and the politicians themselves to ensure their proper message is presented. It does not seem that he prepared quite enough beforehand to memorize most of the speech as he seemed to read it more so than he did looking out towards the audience. This could have hurt it but I feel that the message that is being conveyed is more important than the method to which it is being conveyed by.
For the second video with Mayor Nutter I feel that he did hit on what the audience would be concerned with. With how he touches on subjects that would impact the audience, the residents of Philadelphia, with education, crime, waste management, and taxation. I feel that he does understand his audience well in that he is giving them information that they will find appealing while not "overloading" them with lots of meaningless information. This way the average informed resident who watches this can understand what he is trying to convey. I feel that he does use data and statistics well to backup his message that he is conveying. Although some is a bit much to those not that well informed in which some more analogies to tie them in with more common knowledge may have gotten him a little further.

DISCUSSION 2

* As if a five-year, $1 billion deficit was not bad enough, Mayor Nutter now says the city's budget crisis has gotten worse.

QUESTION 1: How does Mayor Nutter's speech focus on what the audience is most concerned about? Does he appear to understand his audience well?

QUESTION 2: Does Mayor Nutter use data and statistics appropriately? Are his points easy to understand?

One of the effective elements that she displayed was friendly gestures and vocal tone. It wasn't difficult to receive what she was saying due to smiling and keeping the speech full of action versus monotone and boring. It was easy to hear her and follow along with understanding.
The effective element that could be a problem if done excessively was the filled and unfilled pauses because too many umms and inappropriate silent can relay the message that person has lost their places in their notes or has lost track of their ideas or thoughts.

One effective element that she used in the presentation is her enthusiasm for the topic in her delivery. The tone was upbeat and showed some emotion throughout the speech to make it a bit more engaging.
One ineffective element was the consistency of her presentation. She stumbled a bit throughout as if she knew the part of the speech that was coming up but thought she missed something and tried to double back. Another is just that she has brief pauses as well when she is unsure of a part of the speech to which she has to look at her notes to continue on. This draws away from the speech as the inconsistency can just be draining for the audience's attention. I even walked away during the speech to get a drink as it was just painful to watch. Granted I wouldn't do any better but still painful.

In the speech that the young lady presented to her fellow classmates could have been better. She seem nervous while presenting her speech she was doing pretty good in the beginning but she started speaking too fast and stumbling on her words. In addition, to her speech I noticed that she was using note cards which is okay but it's not good to read off the cards word for word just say a few words; it's good to review your research and notes before your speech become familiar with your topic so you can explain it well and with confidence.

I do agree that she was stumbling, and it even seemed like at times she was just trying to get through the presentation because she would make noises that seem like she was indicated that she was ready for the speech to be over. I agree that when making speeches that note cards are beneficial to have simple notes to outline your speech as focus pointers, but to make sure that you are familiar with your information definitely helps with your confidence level and sometimes to the point of hardly looking at the cards.

Below is a comment from my professor, please make a comment and answer the last 2 of his questions

Having interest in your topic and your presentation is important if you expect to hold someone's concentration. An interesting question here is did the speaker ever feel like a point came where things were comfortable and the material flowed more naturally? One difference between a "good" presentation and a "great" one is when a presenter moves beyond the room, so to speak, and makes you feel so engrossed in the subject that you forget (even for a moment) that it is a presentation. Did this presenter ever reach that point? Is it fair to expect it from a student?
Eye contact is another key point to a quality speech. People do not like to feel like they are being "talked at" but rather are being connected with. Eye contact is a way to establish this connection and to make it feel like less of a chore and more of a sharing of ideas.
How do you achieve comfort when presenting? How do you deal with nerves that may get in the way?
