How might the selfish herd hypothesis be affected by social position?

We recently discussed the selfish herd hypothesis and how individuals can reduce predation risk by moving towards the center of the group. However, some species have complex social structures, thus it may be difficult for a low-ranking individual to integrate into the center where it is safer. I'm curious as to what experiments we could propose to test the preference for being selfish in different animals and what trade-offs this may impose.

For example, gorillas have a well-established social hierarchy headed by one dominant male. I hypothesize that lower-ranking males are forced to weigh the trade-offs between remaining on the outside of the group or forcing their way to the middle but potentially incurring the wrath of the dominant male. I love learning about specific behaviors that reduce predation risk, and I'm excited to see what others think.
