Assessment: Social Determinant Analysis and Innovation

Task:
You are a Policy Officer working in the same non-government organisation from Assessment 2. Drawing on the findings from Assessment 2, your manager is keen to hear more about the key determinant you identified in your report and to understand what can be done in your local area to address it. You need to critically analyse your key determinant and propose a public health innovation to address it.

Learning Objective 1: Describe the core philosophical values, principles, conceptual underpinnings, strategies and approaches of public health Apply principles of equity, diversity and inclusion to contemporary public health challenges and evaluate current and future action.

Learning Objective 2: Analyse the role of broader determinants in shaping the health of populations and synthesise understanding of the relative influence of these factors on health in different settings, contexts and the cumulative impact across time.

This social analysis follows a series of steps to continually refine or narrow your focus.
Think about your location from Assignment 2 and the key area of focus you identified from using the Place Standard Tool
Link your area of focus to a social determinant of health
Examine the evidence linking the social determinant to health and well-being
Examine evidence-based strategies and interventions being used to address this social determinant of health in other place-based settings
Propose a public health innovation to address the social determinant in your community
Provide a reflection about undertaking this activity

Your report - suggested structure:

Section 1: Introduction
Provide a brief summary of your community profile, the key area of focus in assignment 2 and the groups you think are most impacted.

Section 2: Linking your area of focus to a social determinant of health - Critical review of the evidence for your determinant
Clearly define the area of focus in relation to a social determinant of health (e.g., you looked at belonging as your area of focus in assignment two, so now you might look in more detail at "social inclusion" as a social determinant of health).
Discuss the evidence linking the social determinant to health and well-being

Section 3: Narrow the focus and examine evidence-based strategies being used to address an aspect of the social determinant in place-based settings
Based on all the data and evidence you've gathered so far describe a particular aspect of the social determinant in your community that you need to focus on (e.g., your determinant might be transport and the aspect you highlight to focus on is public transport)
What are some of the current evidence-based strategies or interventions being used to address this social determinant in place-based settings (i.e., not just your community but anywhere in Australia or similar areas).

Section 4: Your Innovation
Now, propose one targeted public health innovation (your big idea) to address the aspect of the social determinant in your community. Be realistic, you can't change the world. Describe your public health innovation? (e.g., What is it called? How will it work?)
Is there any evidence to support this innovation? (e.g., Why is this an appropriate solution for your determinant? Has something similar been implemented in another Australian or International location?)
If you are drawing on an existing idea, describe how you are adapting this idea to your community (e.g., How will the existing idea be adapted to address your social determinant, and the needs of your community?)
Are there any existing community groups in your suburb or region that are working in this area that you could potentially partner with? How will you engage with your community partners in the design and rollout of your public health innovation?

Section 5: Reflection (500 words - not included in 2000-word count - can be written in first person)
In your reflection consider the following questions:
What did you learn through the process of undertaking a social analysis and identifying a place- based innovation?
Were there any ‘aha' or ‘eureka' moments where you realised something significant?
What have you learnt about the ways we can tackle public health challenges?
Have the online resources assisted your learning this semester? If so, describe how and in what ways?
Have the Masterclasses assisted your academic skills this semester? If so, describe how and in what ways?
