Question: Data in the form of hours charged to a job were analyzed and Pareto-charted to identify where most hours were accruing and why. The analysis revealed significant time being spent on arranging production setups, moving parts, waiting on cranes, and other delays tied to component handling. This insight was supported by spaghetti mapping the workflow of the parts and pulling unplanned work and crane move hours from SAP. As a result, leadership decided to create dedicated work cells with standardized setups and improve scheduling so parts stayed within a controlled area. This reduced crane dependency, minimized setup delays, and significantly decreased the risk of component damage during moves, issues often caused by improper rigging or accidental collisions. Ultimately, the right decision was to allow parts to wait longer in a designated area to maintain workflow efficiency, rather than moving them around the factory to boost utilization metrics for one specific component, but might reduce optimization elsewhere.
