You are working with the Lifestyle Team to support eight residents on a bus outing to visit an art exhibition and have lunch at a nearby cafe before returning to the facility. There are several individual support workers joining you and an RN. There is also a volunteer on the bus. The volunteer discloses to you on the bus ride to the art exhibition that her clearances for volunteering with aged and vulnerable people have expired. You tell her that you need to inform the RN immediately and she begs you not to as she is doing volunteering as part of her Centrelink participation requirements and will lose her payments, and that this will mean she can't feed her kids.
Answer the following questions:
1. Is there an ethical dilemma here? If so, what is it? (what are the competing needs that you need to weigh up?)
2. What should you do, and why? Your answer must refer to at least one Standard and Indicator from the Enrolled Nurse Standards for Practice.
3. How do each of the following consideration impact on your actions in this case: a. Negligence b. Duty of care c. Vicarious liability
4. Name an internal policy and/or procedure that might apply to volunteer obligations.
5. Imagine that you chose not to disclose what you learned, and a complaint was later raised against the volunteer. The volunteer then tells management that they told you their clearance was expired. Would you be subject to disciplinary action? Why or why not?
6. Review your Code of Ethics, Code of Conduct, and Enrolled Nurse Standards for Practice. Name at least one area in each that applies to this situation.
