With this assignment, you will discuss two passages (from two different essays) as you practice applying MLA guidelines and quoting moves.

Instructions

Open the → Quotation Sandwich Practice Template.

Insert your last name in the header box and your first and last name in the heading.

Save the file with the following name: Quotation Sandwich Practice.

Select two of the This I Believe essays to use for this practice assignment.

Then, review your annotations to one of the two essays and select a passage that you would like to introduce, quote, and then discuss for this practice assignment.

Within your discussion you should explain why you selected the passage: What did it make you think about? How does it relate to your own experiences and or views? What did you learn from the words?

Note that you need to set off one passage and not set off one passage.
To set off your passage, use the arrow keys keys on the Home ribbon:

Beneath the first heading Sandwich Practice #1, indent, and then create your quotation sandwich in one or more paragraphs:
Top Slice of Bread: Introduce the essay and the specific passage within your top slice of bread. Include the writer's full name, the title of the essay, the name of the web site (This I Believe), and the date of publication along with a very concise summary.

Quote the passage.
Bottom Slice of Bread: Briefly paraphrase the passage and then discuss the passage, i.e., explain why this passage caught your attention. Note that your discussion of the passage should be around 175 words.
Within your response, incorporate the following:
Italicize the name of the web site and enclose the title of the essay in quotation marks.
Set off the passage if it runs longer than four lines or if you want to draw attention to it. (Note that you need to include 1 set off passage and one passage that is not set off.)
[ ] use brackets to show any changes you made to the passage.
Use ellipsis points to show if you left any words out of the passage.
Use single quotation marks if the passage you quoted contains quoted words and if you did not set off the passage.
Then review the second essay, and as you read, select a passage that you would like to introduce, quote, and then discuss.
Compose your second discussion beneath the second heading Sandwich Practice #2.
Next, scroll down to the last page and delete the entries that do not apply to your response.
