Holland Interest Environments
Once you have explored your personality above, feel free to move on to discussing your interests! Review the Holland Interest Environments as they are introduced in the textbook (see Sukiennik & Raufman, 2016, pp. 60 - 62). As you review this section of the textbook, you will see that this model of interests organizes them into categories or "environments."
The first environment is referred to as "realistic" (Sukiennik & Raufman, 2016, p. 60). This environment refers to those individuals who having hobbies including building things, repairing things, and using their hands. In a way, this model suggests that if we explore our hobbies, they will tell us something about our interests.
As you reflect on your hobbies and the central features of those hobbies that reveal your passionate interest in them, you may begin to see that your interests align with one of the Holland Interest Environments. For example, your hobby may be restoring antique furniture. What interests you and draws you to engage in this activity is the fact that it allows you to use your hands. In one way, this may be reflected best by the Holland category "realistic." However, in another way, using your hands to restore furniture may better align with the category "artistic" as it allows you to sew and design. The category that you decide best captures your interests will likely require additional explanation.
Share with us one to two of your hobbies. Then, share with us the central feature(s) of the hobby that reveals what it is about the hobby that interests you most and accounts for why you engage in the hobby. Finally, share with us which Holland Interest Environment aligns best with your interests. Explain in what way the Holland category captures your interests.
