Question

Retrospective observational studies are nonrandomized, non-interventional analyses of existing data, including patient information, treatment received, and outcomes.

Often referred to as "retrospective chart reviews," these studies often rely on data from electronic health records or medical charts. They are typically conducted when prospective studies are not practical or feasible. The advantage of retrospective chart reviews is the ability to collect large amounts of data on many subjects inexpensively.1 This approach is particularly helpful when studying rare diseases and is commonly used in teaching hospitals due to the ease of data collection and analysis.2 However, using pre-existing records can introduce bias and error as data in medical records are not initially collected for research purposes. Missing information or confounding variables within medical charts may lead researchers to make assumptions that may result in inaccuracies. Failure to address these limitations can cause retrospective chart reviews to yield misleading conclusions. rewrite.
