In most every town and city there are numerous examples of historic public art and monuments. Many corporate offices, malls, airports or other structures often display art, even digital art. Today, the ‘lobby' has become the new public gathering space.
In this assignment, you will take a field trip in your area to locate public art. Visit a piece that interests you, take pictures and write down any information that accompanies the piece about its history, the artist, etc. Keep in mind that you may need to ask permission if the art piece is associated with a building.
Alternately, you can take a virtual field trip. Use the web and various tools, such as Google earth, to explore unique international public art sites. Find online museums, virtual spaces and immersive public art experiences and use the available images and information for your assignment.
After your trip, research the nature of the art piece. Many are commemorative pieces that remember wars, conflicts, soldiers and heroes. Research the events related to the piece and who it represents.
