Assignment

For your assignment you will consider one of the data analytics case studies available in the assigmments folder (sub folder 'case studies').

Whichever case study you are working on, your task is to produce a 10-15 page individual report on this area, introducing the case study area, detailing your own research into the area, some examples of appropriate data analysis and your conclusions.

Each case study comes with a short introduction to the area and some example data to get started with, but you will need to do more independent research into the area yourself, find new data sets or new ways to analyse the data and come to your own conclusions. You should try to use the skills to demonstrate that you understand how to access, read, comprehend and reference scientific literature.

The goal of the project is to demonstrate that you can carry out an independent data analysis project and present your findings clearly.

Case study: Effect of economic growth on health

Your goal is to identify relationships between GDP per capita (a standard measure of wealth in a country) and health outcomes, starting with infant mortality. This is an open ended project, but to get you started here are a number of ideas you might investigate:

Is the relationship between GDP per capita and infant mortality between countries stable over time

Is the relationship between countries (cross-sectional) the same as within a single country over time (longitudinal)

Is the relationship different in different countries. Can you spot times when it breaks down, and relate this to historical events

Explore other health indicators

How can you assess causality? Does wealth cause health, or health cause wealth?

You should identify appropriate statistical models to analyse the data. Furthermore, you should present clear visualisations to aid understanding of both the data set and your findings.
