1. In your nation-state (the one you didn't research for COVID-19), what is the status of climate change? Using the resources listed for the week, along with other resources you find, provide a detailed summary of the affects climate change has had on your nation-state. What level of emissions is present in your nation-state? Have these emissions been rising or falling? What policies, if any, has your nation-state implemented to try to reduce carbon emissions? Have they been successful? Why or why not?
2. In this discussion, take your notes from reading your classmates' summaries of climate change in their nation-states and develop a comprehensive analysis. What are the common experiences? Do you notice differences? What are the sources of differences? e.g., type of regime, level of economic development, population density, etc. What are the patterns you can discern?
You must start a thread before you can read and reply to other threads
3. The purpose of these groups is to develop a climate change strategy among the nation-states that you represent. Groups are limited to four nation-states. I have assigned you to a group based on your nation-state. Your strategy must include: reduction in the pollution that causes climate change, plan for a transition away from a carbon-based economy , and a plan for future development. Your plan may require a joint purchasing agreement (e.g., to purchase equipment for alternative energy production), border controls, trade, or other strategies to mitigate climate change in your nation-state. Throughout, you must act in the best interest of your nation-state.
Each group must produce a "strategy document" which includes contributions from each nation-state. Each group member should write a plan for their nation-state, share it with the group for feedback, and then create a single document that shows all strategies and provides an overview of the comprehensive plan for action.
4. Over the past two weeks, you have researched your nation-state's experience with and response to climate change. You have assessed other nation-states' experiences and responses as well. Finally, you have worked with three other nation-states to develop a climate change strategic plan. What do you think are the most important factors in successfully responding to climate change? What does this teach you about the challenges, and opportunities, of diplomacy? How does globalization (re)shape global politics in an era of climate change?
