A prime example involved a nurse who, during shift report, criticized a colleague. What the nurse said was disrespectful, and it made all of us uncomfortable. Instead of addressing her issue with the colleague privately, the nurse chose to vent her frustrations in front of the whole group. This was an example of incivility at work. It created a hostile environment, damaged our team's morale, and could have made patients within listening range feel unsafe. The charge nurse was informed of the incident and discussed it with those involved. She brought the two individuals into her office to work out the issues stemming from the incident. The nurse who had been making defensive remarks was, well, defensive (and I would be too if I were put on the spot like that!). She finally worked her way to the conclusion that the remarks could have been made in a better way. The manager of this situation also discussed, with the team as a whole, the organization's policy (yes, there is one) on professional and respectful communication.
