A client has been newly diagnosed with HIV, and is prescribed a protease inhibitor. The provider is taking a detailed history and the client says that she takes a medication for migraine headaches. What significance does this have to the nurse? Because of the client's migraine headaches, the client will not be able to be treated for a new diagnosis of HIV. The nurse will need to assist the client in getting therapy to accept the new diagnosis. This client may need an increase in pain medication due to her history of migraine headaches. None. Migraine headaches have nothing to do with HIV so the client will be treated in the same way that other clients with HIV are treated. If the prescribed migraine medication is an ergot derivative, the nurse must contact the provider to change the medication in order to prevent increased risk of peripheral ischemia.
