Everyone's job is critical in the healthcare field, especially when it involves communicating a person's health record. Compliance is crucial to coding because it breaks down the process of what brought a patient to be seen and the steps taken to ensure the patient's treatment. Coding also keeps track of the medical necessity regarding preparation for similar or reoccurring diseases/encounters which helps the nation as a whole. A healthcare facility must be compliant to avoid legal punishment while promoting good ethics as well. Licensures and accreditation rights may also be tarnished in the event an organization continuously does not follow the rules and guidelines provided to them, and correct coding compliance is included in those rules. To ensure I am compliant with the rules I will research up-to-date information and examples to get an insight on what is required of me to perform my job. I will enhance my knowledge by participating in all scheduled meetings regarding coding ethics and asking many questions whenever I am not sure if I am complying. Standard/Guideline 2.2. says "Select and sequence diagnosis and procedure codes, present on admission, discharge status following the definitions of required data sets in all healthcare settings.
