The personal statement is used by the scholarship committee and/or donor to get to know you better. Your personal statement should outline your academic and career goals, both current and future. You should also explain how this award will assist you in achieving these goals both financially and academically. (At least 200 minimum, no set maximum.)

As a father of 4 and employee at Amtrak, my goals relate to both of these roles. I believe that being the first in my family to attend and graduate from college will influence my children to what to achieve more and to show them that the right college degree can be a stepping stone towards a great career, and better life then previous generations in my family. As an employee, I have worked for Amtrak as Rail Car Mechanic for 6 years, during my first two years I decided to go to college because I wanted to learn and grow more. After speaking with an engineer that work at the company I chose to become an engineer. Last year to be able to take classes during the summer I had to use my credit cards. I believe that college is an investment in myself and that its worth going in debt to better myself and will pay off when I graduate. This award will allow me to be in less debt, and not have to pay for college out of pocket. This award will help me academically because I will be able to afford all of the material for each of my classes. Which will allow me to focus better in my classes and improve my grades.
