PART A: To be completed during the tutorials. Each taking turns to perform the role of a manager. Attendance during your tutorial is a hurdle and Part A must be completed before part B. If you do not attend, you will not be eligible to submit your STAR report.

For this assessment, you will be given a scenario and will be required to adopt the role of the manager in resolving the issue presented using techniques covered in lectures.

This will require you to demonstrate appropriate counselling/mediation skills including:

· Demonstrate an understanding of the layout/structure of a counselling session

· Understanding of legal and ethical issues in such situations

· The capacity to control the situation

· Use of appropriate communication skills (both verbal and non-verbal)

· Display an attitude that supports both the employee and the organisation's viewpoint

· Collaborative problem-solving skills

· Capacity to develop a workable solution and an action plan

The attached assessment sheet sets out the required performance criteria for when you are the manager. Further role play information will be provided.

This is scenario of part A:

Scenario A Counsellor: Manager of ABC Travel Agency The employee (Jessica) is a 45-year-old woman, a single mother with one 16yearl old child who is attending severalafter-class tutorials to prepare for nextyear's VCE. She has been an travel consultant in the company for many years. Ingeneral, she has achieved all the KPIs. However, a pattern of sick leaves on Fridays, Mondays and some Thursdays in the past 3 months has been observed.

Scenario B Counsellor: Back of House Manager The employee (Jack) is a 29-year-old man who is hard-working and enjoys trying out new things and meeting with different people.This is his third year as a sous chef in the restaurant. His main role is to help with food preparation and supervision of the kitchen staff. The executive chef has been designing and choosing the menu items. He used to excel in all aspects, but Jack's recent performance appraisal shows areas requiring improvement (e.g., production speed and food wastage). Meanwhile, he received a rating of three for attendance and punctuality. He's been taking sick leave for every Friday in the past 2 months and he's been late for work a few times too.

Part B:
Word Count: 1500 words

You are required to write an analytical journal of your experiences in conducting the counselling/mediation session (see hurdle above).

You should analyse the counselling session using the S*T*A*R technique. The following headings should be addressed:

S: Situation - in this section you will give a brief description of the situation/case by identifying the presenting operational/behavioural issues involved together with likely ramifications. You are required to consider potential outcomes as reasons for the session.

T: Theory/Techniques - in this section you will describe any theories applicable to counselling together with an overview of techniques/communication aspects discussed in tutorials that would apply to counselling/mediation generally. You should consult your text and readings for this section. You should also outline legal and ethical issues relevant to this case.

A: Action - in this section you should examine the actions taken in the session by yourself and the participant in relation to the theories/techniques outlined above. For example; what technique was used in order to convince the employee that there was a problem? Include the agreed action plan from your role-play.

R: Reflection - in this section, you should reflect on the three previous sections and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using this method when counselling employees generally and in particular to this case. You should reflect on your skills as a manager and consider what could have been done better and how could this have been achieved. What significant concepts and practices did you learn by undertaking the role-play? What are your weaknesses and how will you work to strengthen them.
