OTMT 634 Change Management Assignment

Pepperdine Graziadio Business School - Pepperdine University, USA

Introduction: The pace, volume and complexity of the business world have significantly increased. Indeed, the very environment in which businesses compete changes on a rapid basis, and the pace of change in the business world will accelerate over time. This course is designed to educate the students on the realities of change management in the work force and provide practical application of change management strategies as well as theoretical discussions on the subject.

Course Objectives: After successfully completing this course, students will:

Acquire a greater working knowledge of the change management process.

Be better able to diagnose organizational performance via the study and application of the components that make up an organization, how they work together and how they may need to be realigned.

Increase their ability to work in teams and meetings via the study of group theory, completion of team assignments and participation in classroom discussion.

Have a greater ability to evaluate and communicate organizational concepts for the purpose of delivering solutions to improve organizational performance.

Have a greater ability to identify the need for organizational change and affect that change.

Have a greater appreciation for the role of organizational consultants in the change management process.

Have a greater knowledge of consulting principals and techniques via practical application.

Apply the various concepts from this course to real-world situations.

Case Analysis Paper -

Students will choose one of the four cases listed in the required reading section of the syllabus (cases can be found in the Resources tab in Sakai) and write a group paper that analyzes the case. Topics for the paper should include, but are not limited to, the following:

What were the main ideas presented in the case?

What are some of the change management strategies to be applied in dealing with the situations the case stresses?

Are there additional examples your group members encountered that dealt with the issues outlined in the case?

Do you agree with the case author(s)? Why or why not?

Only one paper per group needs to be submitted. Paper length should be 6-10 pages.

Group Final Presentation: Change Management Case Study

Students will choose a case study or recent company that has been in the news regarding a change management initiative or a pivot in terms of marketing/business practices. Groups may also choose a disruptive technology in a particular industry and outline how this technology will disrupt an industry and what change management practices you recommend to address this disruptive technology. Other topics for this assignment may be executed upon approval from the professor. Presentations should be around 30 minutes in length, with an additional 5 to 10 minutes for questions and answers with the class.

Application Paper -

At the end of the course, your final exam will be an application paper, which describes how you anticipate the concepts from this course will apply to your professional life. This paper should be written with your current situation in mind and looking forward, but not applying the course's concepts retrospectively to a past situation.

Among the questions you should address in this paper are:

What are the most relevant concepts from the course to you?

How do you anticipate those concepts impacting you professionally?

How will you apply these concepts to your future work?

(Optional) What from this course has made an impact on you personally or professionally as you have progressed through this course?

What from this course do you anticipate having the greatest impact on you professionally as you move forward in your career?

Knowing what you know after taking this course, what will you do differently from now on?

As you answer these questions, be as specific as possible. Don't just say, "I found the concept of disruptive technologies to be relevant to me." Write specifically about how you would apply a certain model to a situation.

The important criteria in this paper are application and specificity. Your success in this paper will depend not only on how well you demonstrate an understanding of concepts, but on how well you can apply them to real world situations. The more specificity you bring to your discussion, the better the application will be.

This paper should be written at a level consistent with a graduate program. However, as this is a highly personal paper, it is acceptable-and advisable-to write in the first-person. Think of this paper as telling a story-a personal one about you and your work.
