In New York City, the CDC states that heart disease, specifically coronary artery disease (CAD), is the leading cause of death (2022). I have decided to compare the USA healthcare system to the one in Canada, where I currently live and work. One way care could be improved in New York City is by creating a better-integrated care system for patients with heart disease, like CAD, that has universally free aspects. Currently, the system may seem fragmented and costly for those without health coverage. In the case of CAD, having primary care doctors, cardiologists and nutritionists work together more closely could improve outcomes by ensuring everyone is on the same page, reducing unnecessary hospital visits, and focusing on preventive care. There should be a focus on more unique ways to offer early health education that could be accessed by those in low-income areas where access to care is more difficult. A more integrated system like this would not only help manage the condition but also help avoid more serious health issues down the road.
