Childhood Obesity
Please read the Mexico Obesity Case from the 2012 Global Health Case Competition (Required reading for session 9). As indicated in the case, you are to serve as an advisor to Dr. Hernandez, who was Mexico's delegate to the 2011 United Nations (UN) High-Level Meeting on Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs). He is currently the Director of the Division of Child Health in Mexico's Ministry of Health. Within your groups and without duplication, each should person select one of the following themes that are potential targets for intervention: Agriculture, trade and "Big Food"; Cultural and dietary norms; Social policy; Double burden (ie. Undernutrition in early childhood / overnutrition in adulthood); Built environment; Healthcare.
Each team member will conduct research on their thematic area related to its contributions to pediatric obesity and develop an evidence based policy / programmatic recommendation. Each team member should then post a brief (<1000 words) technical document outlining the role of the thematic area in obesity in Mexico and presenting an evidence-based recommendation in your thematic area to combat childhood obesity in Mexico.
Be prepared to defend your recommendation to your team members and the recommendation(s) ultimately selected by your team, to the class.
