In some cultures (especially Confucian-orientated societies), seniority of age is the main way of gaining power. In those cultures, decision making is likely to be in the hands of older managers. There is a Chinese proverb that basically says, "young people cannot be trusted with important tasks". Suppose you are now over 50 years old; would you feel comfortable reporting to a manager who is more 20 years younger than you? Now imagine that you are a manager of a team in which the members are much older than you and some members are from confusion-orientated cultures. What is your best strategy in managing that team especially when you have to criticise their work?
