QUESTION 1

The Government House is being fully refurbished and UTM Construction Company has started demolition works to remove some old structures erected some 100 years ago. However, a worker alerted his union about difficulty in breathing and the presence of some fibrous construction materials while breaking down the wooden roof structure of the historic building. Information gathered by the main contractor confirmed that asbestos was extensively used to protect the building against fire. Meanwhile, the union has ordered its members to stop work until management implement appropriate safety and health measures related to removal and disposal of asbestos containing materials on the site. You have thus been appointed by the company for your professional advice on this specific health hazard.
