The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) is planning to build a new interstate to run from Detroit, Michigan, to Charleston, South Carolina. Several different routes have been proposed. They are summarized in Figure 5.41, where node 1 represents Detroit and node 12 represents Charleston. The number on the arcs indicates the estimated construction costs of the various links (in millions of dollars). It is estimated that all of the routes will require approximately the same total driving time to make the trip from Detroit to Charleston. Thus, the DOT is interested in identifying the least costly alternative.
a. Formulate an LP model to determine the least costly construction plan.
b. Use Solver to determine the optimal solution to this problem.
The sample function of a Gaussian process of zero mean and unit variance is uniformly sampled and then applied to a uniform quantizer having the input-output amplitude characteristic shown in Figure. Calculate the entropy of the quantizer output.
Based on experience with the current coffee makers, your best guess for the population standard deviation, sigma, is 1.2 cups. How big of a sample do you need? Calculate the estimated sample size needed for the above scenario and communicate your ..
Use Newton's 2nd law to derive the equations of motion for the system shown in Figure 1 where the solid, uniform cylinder of mass m and radius R is rolling on a rough slope without slipping. The cylinder is connected to the fixed surface through t..
The correlation between number of friends and grade point average (GPA) for 50 adolescents is .37. Is this significant at the .05 level for a two-tailed test?
Fix a modulus m and use the affine cipher with key k1 = (a, b) to encrypt an element x; then encrypt the result with a key k2 = (c, d). What is the resulting cipher
What is the probability that the first selected candy is lemon or that the second selected candy is cherry?
Find the joint distribution of the random sample in part (c). List all assumptions made when finding this joint distribution and explain whether or not each is reasonable in this scenario.
Describe the statistical analysis. (HINT: This should either be a correlation/regression depending on your research question). What is your IV(s)? What is your DV? What level of measurement are your IV(s) and DV? What is your alpha level?
A large aquarium of height 5.00 m is filled with fresh water to a depth of 2.00 m. One wall of the aquarium consists of thick plastic 8.00 m wide. By how much does the total force on that wall increase if the aquarium is next filled to a depth of ..
Assuming these percentages remain valid over a long period of time, how many customers can the company expect to have in each category in the long run?
1.1. Write a program that will find the maxima of the following function using Golden section search algorithm starting from xl = -4 and xu = 1. Your function should take xl , xu, and number of iterations as input parameters. Also plot the graph e..
