Question: Carl is the manager of a bar in a medium-sized town with many similar bars and a reputation for catering for a ‘good night out'. He works around 90 hours a week and his performance is measured by the turnover of the bar. As the supply cost of alcohol reduces with volume sold, he must get as many customers as possible into the bar and encourage consumption. To do this, on some nights the bar offers £1 entry plus £1 per drink. Local residents are increasingly complaining about the rough and drunken culture which now seems to be the norm on most nights in the town. Can this be justified on a utilitarian basis as the pursuit of pleasure? Is the bar an ethical business?
