In today's age, Google has been the key to finding and learning valuable information in such little time. Many people have used this fully-automated search engine across the globe for many tasks. Teachers, parents, and children can use this engine to learn any topic they desire. However, is anyone learning while using this search engine? Is Google making us stupid?
In the article "Is Google Making Us Stupid?" by Nicholas Carr, In paragraph 33 claims that "deep reading" has been replaced by "skimming." He argues that people are now more likely to skim articles or text rather than engage in deep, focused reading. His claims are persuasive because they depend on one's perspective and experience reading any article online. For example, a reader does not have to read Nicholas Carr's whole article to understand his points, as "skimming" is a method used to gather the main points quickly. With skimming, you can cover vast amounts of material more quickly and save time for everything else you have on your plate. In the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, "Sometimes you do not have time to do everything. You may only have time to finish your reading after class, but skimming will help you get the main points and attend class much more prepared to maximize in-class learning. "
Nicholas Carr states that distractions and interruptions are shared online, making deep reading more difficult. However, that can be said of having a deep reading as well. Carr needs to provide more concrete evidence to his claims for his readers to understand the difference between deep reading and skimming, as his points could be more consistent. He references historical examples of the value of deep reading and the impact that reading has had on culture. However, his argument might have been strengthened by providing more concrete examples of how deep reading is sabotaged by the Internet and discussing the positive benefits of this kind of reading because it depends on the individual to see which reading method works best for them.
