In the poem "St. George," poet Nancy Senior uses the dragon as an irony to satirize the knight's arrogance. From the contrast between the usual belief about the dragon's character and the relationship between the dragon and the maiden, readers learn the theme that sometimes people may be deceived by their eyes because a person's appearance may not indicate a person's true nature.

In people's stereotypical belief, the dragon is usually described as "big, bad, and strong," which is a dangerous and evil existence that may be a threat to the humankind. Some people even believe that it "will destroy the land unless the princess is fed to it." However, in this poem, the dragon is much different from the impression in people's mind, it is a nice dragon who becomes friend with the local princess and protect her from robbers' attack. They always spend time together and the dragon loves to walk with the princess and used to "laying his head on [her] lap". Overall, the poet uses a cheerful tone and a lot of imagery to create a visual image of the princess' friendship with dragon and shows that the dragon is in fact friendly and nice.

The knight is not aware of the relationship between the princess and the dragon, he directly kills the dragon without asking whether the maiden needs help. The knight "slays the evil dragon with ease" and he didn't even consider the truth in the reality and make the decision based on his stereotypical belief about the dragon. The knight killed the dragon without any hesitation and the dragon died before he could explain the truth. It doesn't even have the time to " to put out his claws". The ridicule is justified in the poem given the cheerful and ironical tone of the poem. The poet creates a quick and unexpected ending that surprises the reader.

At the end of the poem, the knight's arrogance makes him believe that he has saved the princess by killing her dragon. Even when the princess cry with sorrow because of the death of the dragon, the knight urges her not to cry and that she is safe and warn her that "next time you meet a dragon, there might not be a knight around to save you". Senior makes a clear ridicule when comparing the previous tone of the poem with the ending. He uses the dragon as an irony to satirize the knight and shows that the knight actually kills the nice dragon based on his own assumptions instead of the truth.

In sum, people make quick decision based on their own assumptions instead of trying to know the truth by themselves.
