Waste Management

Effective management of waste has a tremendous impact on the health of environments and populations. There are many types of waste that are discussed in your textbook.

While necessary, landfills are usually not a welcomed site within any neighborhood. Not In My Back Yard or "NIMBY" is an acronym used by many who object to the placement of landfills near residential areas. Several community leaders have expressed deep concerns about the presence of a landfill in your current county of residence. As an employee of your local Department of Environmental Quality, you have been charged with protecting the air, water, and soil in your respective county or state. In attempt to address the concerns of the public, you are tasked with visiting the local landfill to ensure compliance with all state environmental laws and policies.

Research at least one local landfill site in your county of residence. In a three page paper:

Describe the proximity to residential areas, population ethnicity, and any concerns about health outcomes of the population.
Investigate/identify the type of waste accepted within the landfill and discuss potential physical, chemical and/or biological hazards that may be associated with each waste type.
Differentiate how landfill waste is regulated within the United States and a low-income country. How does the level of governmental oversight of waste management differ and what are the barriers to effective management of waste products in both countries?
