Belief systems and regional practices influenced the development of Indigenous visual culture in the Americas in various ways. Select two artworks created by two different cultures from this list to analyze and compare in your essay related to the question below:

- Ghost Dance Drum, Sioux Culture
First, identify each artwork you have selected with the title, the culture, and date [see study material]. Then, discuss and compare the two artworks you have selected in terms of their function and meanings for the culture in relation to belief systems, ritual and/or social practices. How would each object be used specifically iby the culture? Describe and compare the distinct stylistic characteristics of each artwork. What aspects do these visual objects have in common? What do they tell us about the differences between the two cultures?
A good essay will discuss:
- The specific cultural and social practices that are related to the artworks.
- How the visual features and choice of material are used to communicate specific social practices and beliefs.
- The specific functions and of each artwork.
- The main idea or message that each artwork communicates related to the imagery, design and medium.
- How the two artworks compare to each other.
For this question, you will looking at the contemporary Native American artists to analyze and assess one of artworks and artists. After selecting an artwork, give the full title, artist, medium & date. Then explain in an essay how this artist is influenced and draws upon traditional Native American art. In your essay, discuss the main concept/message expressed by the artwork and what specific traditional artforms and/or imagery, content and visual elements the artist incorporates from the past. Compare the artwork to at least one specific artwork from a traditional Native American culture we have studied that you see a connection to.

Lastly Congratulations! You have been appointed the new curator of Non-Western art at the Fresno Art Museum. You have been asked to select five artworks from five different distinct cultures for the museum collection to help educate visitors about the history and style of art from the cultures of Africa, Oceania and Indigenous North America. You must justify your selection to the museum board by arguing why these artworks would be valuable additions to the museum. What would visitors to the FAM learn about the specific cultures, styles and history of the people from each artwork? Then, explain why you personally selected these artworks?
Guidelines for selecting artworks & answering Essay 2:
1. You may select any 5 artworks from ones we have studied this semester with these exceptions:
- You may not select architecture--the work has to be potentially displayed inside the museum.
- You may not select the artworks that you wrote about in Essays 1 & 2.
- Artworks must be from five different cultures.
- 2 artworks must be from the Midterm Study Guide
- 2 artworks must be from the Final Exam Study Guide
- The fifth artwork may be from another culture from either study guide
2. Be sure to include the following information for each artwork: title, culture, time period and medium.
3. Write about each artwork in a separate paragraph.
4. Discuss the function of the artwork and describe some key visual details using art terms.
5. Give reasons you believe it is a historically important artwork. Be specific in your justification for selecting each artwork.
6. Include your personal connection to each artwork - either in a concluding paragraph or within your discussion of each artwork.
