Assessment - Personal leadership self-appraisal
Assessment - Reflective Essay
Your Task
Students will self-audit their leadership style, skills and competencies and then write an appraisal in a reflective essay, identifying areas for personal growth.
Assessment Description
In this individual assessment, students will identify and appraise their leadership traits, skills and competencies and compare these to the traits and characteristics of successful 21st-century leaders
- as studied in Weeks 1-3. To do this, students will first complete three self-assessment questionnaires (see instructions that follow), which are also discussed in Weeks 1-3, to understand their own personal traits, characteristics and behaviours.
Using the results of the self-assessment questionnaires, students will then complete a leadership "gap analysis" to compare their results to the "Leadership Checklist"
Learning outcome 1: Explore the advantages and disadvantages of various contemporary leadership styles.
Learning outcome 2: Analyse the traits and behaviours of contemporary leaders.
Assessment Instructions
For the first step of this assessment, students must complete the self-assessment questionnaires and the ‘Leadership Checklist' located in the supplementary materials tab in the Assessment 1 tab.
Students should also follow the instructions provided with each questionnaire to interpret and classify their traits and characteristics.
After completing the questionnaires, the second step is for students to conduct a leadership skills and competencies "gap analysis" by comparing their personal test results to the "Leadership Checklist". This will assist students in undertaking critical self-appraisal and identify areas for personal growth and development as leaders.
The final step is for students to "write up" a concise summary of the results of their self-assessment, appraisal and gap analysis in the form of a brief "reflective essay" structured as follows:
A "reflective" appraisal of the results from the three (3) self-assessment questionnaires listed above (i.e. The extent to which they believe the "results" and "classifications" are true or accurate) (250 words)
Clear identification of and reflective thoughts about their leadership skills and competencies based on the "Leadership Checklist". (250 words)
Clear identification of any "gaps" in their skill set and competencies based on the "Leadership Checklist", and identify and discuss what skills they need to develop to be better equipped in future leadership roles. (250 words)
A brief response to the question "What does it mean to be a good leader in the current business environment?" (250 words)
Reference list and in-text citations related to any concepts, models or theories specifically referred to.
Appendices include all the results of all questionnaires and self-appraisal. (Not included in word count)
