This essay is an analysis of drama, specifically one of the plays we've read this semester. This essay will help you meet the following objectives:

1. Identify the structural elements of drama.

2. Examine the ideas and values of drama in historical and philosophical context.

3. Make a well-organized essay based on a primary source (a play) and secondary sources.

4. Document the use of a primary source.

5. Implement MLA

6. Use research in a formal paper with formatting and documentation style appropriate for the audience and subject. Topic (Choose one topic from this numbered list in order to make a analysis essay about it.)

1. Explore how marriage and/or gender roles are treated in either Trifles or Fences. In order to complete a full analysis as you brainstorm, consider the way deception is used, how women and men interact with each other and with members of the same gender, and what was commonly acceptable during the time that the play was set.

2. Determine a theme for Fences and support your thesis with proof from each Act of the play. Don't forget to focus on minor characters, as they often contribute greatly to a play's theme.

3. Examine how one of the plays is critical of the time in which it was set. Be sure you understand when the play takes place versus when it was written.

The first paragraph should hook the reader in some way. You may use an anecdote about what appealed to you in the play. You must include the title and author's name. The thesis must be presented as the final sentence (or two) of the introduction. The body paragraphs must prove your thesis by analyzing the work you did in the Brainstorm and Analysis. You must refer to the author by last name. MLA requires that plays are cited by page number. For your conclusion, do not simply restate the main points of the introduction! The end of the essay should focus on why readers should care about the play and what it has contributed to the world of drama.
