Discussion: Effective Communication
Review the Discussion Requirements for this course before responding to the prompt below.
As individuals, we are constantly communicating. It is vital to focus on the audience so that effective communication and transfer of meaning can occur. This transmission can be in the form of written, verbal, or nonverbal communication, and a very important part of the exchange is listening. Understanding barriers to communication, best channels for delivering messages, and tips for better listening can help to improve communication practices.
The textbook explains that globalization and technological advances will continue to accelerate, which means that communication challenges could likely develop. The authors encourage us to pay attention to differences among groups and cultures while keeping an open mind and relying on common courtesy and common sense when interacting with others. The Golden Rule from this week's devotional come into play as well - communicate with others in the same way you want to be treated. Furthermore, the Bible provides guidance in how we are to communicate with others. There are numerous verses in the Bible related to how we communicate, so this further emphasizes the importance of being an effective communicator.
Refer to the following Scriptures related to communication practices: Colossians 4:6, Psalm 19:14L., Ephesians 4:29, Proverbs 16:24., Matthew 12:36-37, Titus 3:1-2, and Romans 10:9-13
Initial Post:
Consider your own communication strengths and weaknesses. Identify a time when you were (or someone who was communicating with you was) ineffective at the communication process, ensuring the following points are addressed:
- Identify the communication channel that was used and whether it played a role in the ineffectiveness of the exchange. Would a different channel have been better? If so, which one and why?
- Explain the barrier(s) that was/were in place causing noise to distract from the process.
- Discuss the nonverbal communication that was used by you and the other person during the exchange. Explain how the nonverbal communication aided or disrupted the communication process.
- Include a scripture referencing communication that you find helpful or encouraging and explain the reasoning behind your choice.
