Discussion: Revised Project Topic and Rationale
For this discussion:
• Provide a specific, descriptive, short title for your proposed data review project in the subject line of your post.
• Incorporate instructor feedback from the Unit 1 discussion on your project topic.
• Provide information about the target organization (name, type of facility, for-profit versus nonprofit, size, and website URL) for your project, as well as one alternate organization. If known, please indicate the title and name of the individual whom you believe is a decision maker for review and approval of a proposed data review project.
• Post your revised Unit 1 discussion project topic using the four-sentence format, and ensure that you have clearly articulated the performance indicators you will examine. The four-sentence format in Unit 1 includes the statement of the problem (not a benefit), the performance indicators to examine, the units of measurement, and how the project adds value to the organization. Your initial post should be succinct and address all parts of the question, including specifics of the target organization.
• Adhere to the standards of master's level scholarly writing: spell check, grammar check, APA format, and so on. You are encouraged to submit writing samples to the Writing Center and the Smarthinking linked in the Resources.
Note: Be mindful of the turnaround time of 24-48 hours for receiving feedback from Smarthinking, if you plan on using this service.
Use the following statement as an example for your post:
Lack of patient safety can negatively affect patients, clinicians, and other stakeholders who interface with the clinical laboratory (Smith, 2014). I would like to examine the percentage of compliance with safety standards for specimen intake, specimen processing, result reporting, and storage or handling of chemical agents as outlined by [authoritative body X assessment tool for compliance]. This project will add value to [Organization X] by identifying areas for compliance and quality improvements, enhancement of patient safety efforts and potential cost containment. This project aligns with my future career goals by allowing the opportunity for me to lead in exploring a real-world health care problem in the laboratory setting.
Note: The problem statement must be stated as a problem rather than as a benefit. The problem statement should be accompanied by a citation. The purpose of the citation is to validate the relevance of the problem, as well as the availability of literature.
Here is a checklist of common errors or oversights to avoid.
• The topic is conceptual and too broad to be measured.
• The performance indicators stated do not directly relate to the problem being examined.
• The performance indicators to be examined are not clearly identified.
• The performance indicators under examination are not accompanied by units of measurement.
• No time frame nor organization is specified to provide restrictions for the data examination.
• Prohibited research on human subjects is proposed.
• A field project or initiative, rather than a review of existing data is proposed.
• Crafting a value statement for the organization by stating that the proposed or ideal outcome for the data review will occur, or has already occurred before the data has been examined.
• Crafting a value statement for the learner is not required.
• Proposing an outcome for something that has not already happened. (Example: this project will assure an improvement in X).
