Question: When the Brooklyn Bridge was being constructed in New York in the 19th century, compressed air was used in the caissons where workers dug out the foundations for the bridge piers. This innovative working practice unfortunately resulted in severe illness and fatalities in the work force. There was no shortage of workers willing to participate as the pay was good. No other way of building the piers was seen as practical at that time and the extent of the health problems resulting from this working practice had not been foreseen. How would you assess the moral responsibility of the managers of this project? The chief engineer was willing to undergo the same working conditions as his men and continued his work when seriously ill. Would this affect your view of moral responsibility in this case?
