The girl Jig in the Hills Like White Elephants is an important character as she remains ambiguous throughout the story, and it is unclear whether she is a developing character. Another character in the story is the American man, who is vital in building up the story despite not being a developing character. He continues to portray the same attitude to Jig by trying to persuade her to do the abortion. The waitress, the woman at the train station bar, is also vital in the story as she represents the opposite of the girl. The American interacts with her when he purchases the drinks, but the two do not start any intimate or sexual relationship.
