Assignment:
This assignment invites students to explore their own career journey through examination of their experiences, values, beliefs, assumptions, and opportunities and connect them to career development theory and concepts. Elements of the paper will include a visual aid representing a career genogram including at least two generations removed from the student.
Create your own informal career genogram by considering the careers of family members/significant others going back to your grandparent's generation if possible. Use these insights to inform your paper. 3. Paper elements (headings) include:
? Themes: Identify and explain at least three (3) patterns, interrelationships and/or themes that are evident throughout the genogram (educational, historical, economic, political, religious, spiritual, etc...). How might have values/culture played a role in the genogram? What career counseling theory or concept can be applied in this career autobiography and explain how.
? Personal Illuminations: Identify and expand on at least two (2) insights or discoveries you made as a result of this assignment. (When reviewing your genogram and your personal career journey so far, consider questions such as: "What were you supposed to be when you grew up? Were you told that you could be anything or were you told which occupation to choose? Were you expected to "do better" than your parents? Were there myths, legends, or legacies in your family that served to propel or hold you back? Were some occupations considered better or more acceptable than others? Was higher education an expectation or anomaly? Were you expected to have one career/job or many? Are work environments similar/different throughout the genogram?)
? Next Steps: How can you apply the insights you gained in this assignment to your future job search process, career decisions, or when working with clients? Where do you see yourself career wise in the next 5 years? What are some strategies or resources you can use for your future career planning and development? Summarize the paper with a conclusionary paragraph.
